Slipknot is a nine-piece hardcore metal band from Des Moines, IA that was
formed in 1995 by percussionist Shawn "Clown" Crahan (#6) and bassist Paul Gray
(#2).
Aside from their real names, members of the band are also referred by numbers
'zero' through 'eight'. Donning surrealistic masks and matching uniforms, their outlandish appearance
serves as a visual representation of the music and how it makes them feel. "It's almost like wearing the music", says lead vocalist
Corey Taylor (#8). "The music for us is so tangible that you can wrap it around
yourself and feel safe. You can get inside it and explore it."
A demo recorded in 1996, titled 'Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat.', eventually got the
band signed to Roadrunner Records, through which they went on to release some of
the most critically-acclaimed and biggest-selling albums in the history of the
record company.
The band has gone through numerous line-up changes since their inception prior
to becoming the nine-piece "family unit" that they are today, and they insist that
Slipknot wouldn't have been possible any other way. Every current member is an essential ingredient to the band's art. "There's a line in
'Danger Keep Away' that goes 'The pieces are only as good as the whole,' and
I've always believed that from the very beginning", says Crahan. "Each one of us
is a great musician, and then beyond that a great artist, and beyond that a
great performer. And one thing I've always believed in is that although each
individual can stand on his own feet and take his art to some really great
place, I think that you wouldn't have Slipknot if it wasn't for the nine
individuals putting out what we do together as a single nine-headed monster."
Slipknot's extreme music and violent, cathartic stage performances have made
them one of the most popular bands of the contemporary music scene. Their albums
and home videos have achieved Platinum-sales status, with Grammy nominations and
awards in
the Best Heavy Metal Performance and Best Hard Rock Performance categories for
songs from all three of their albums. Last updated: 10.13.2006 |
